Katalina Mills was super depressed about her boyfriend's recent treachery. He dumped Katalina for another girl,  and this a few days removed from their first sexual encounter. This,  more than being dumped,  bothered Katalina most. She was afraid that the whole school would know by now of her breakup and decided to stay home. This is where her step-mother comes into play. Amber,  Step-Momma,  went in to check on Katalina to see if she was going to eat breakfast. She noticed Katalina looked a little down.
